A group of Democrats walked into a New Jersey state office last week carrying boxes filled with signed election petitions. Their goal was to get onto ballots in the state’s Democratic primary, on June 4, and to be elected as delegates to the Democratic National Convention. “Justice for Palestine, permanent cease-fire now.”One of the four dozen would-be delegates had gathered 220 signatures; another had gotten 157. TRENTON, N.J. (AP) —A former TV news reporter known for his aggressive on-camera demeanor is getting into New Jersey's U.S. Senate race as a Republican candidate for the seat currently held by Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez, who's facing federal corruption charges. Zdan joins a GOP field that is quickly filling with candidates, including Mendham Borough Mayor Christine Serrano Glassner and southern New Jersey businessman Curtis Bashaw on the GOP side. New Jersey has not elected a Republican to the U.S. Senate since 1972, but Republicans are hoping the turmoil surrounding Menendez gives them a pickup opportunity in the narrowly divided chamber. He's vowed to fight the charges, though many of his fellow Democrats have abandoned him and some have said he should resign. Zdan left TV journalism after being laid off during cutbacks at News 12 late last year.

The pay increase appeared to have bipartisan support, though lawmakers never voted directly on it. Supporters of the pay increase say it is likely to make the Legislature more diverse when it's in danger of becoming mostly retirees and wealthy people. CNN —Connecticut will cancel roughly $650 million in medical debt for an estimated 250,000 residents this year, Gov. More than 1 in 10 Connecticut residents have medical debt in collections. New Jersey included $10 million in its most recent budget to fund a pilot program to cancel residents’ medical debt, and Gov. Medical debt is now the largest source of debt in collections, totaling more than credit cards, utilities and auto loans combined, according to the White House. And the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and the Biden administration are also considering ways to minimize the burden of medical debt.

New Jersey has already enshrined abortion rights as law, increased funding for abortion services and required regulated health insurance plans to cover the procedure.

Taco John’s, the regional taco chain that had “Taco Tuesday” trademarked for 34 years, announced last month that it’s ending its fight in defending the phrase against Taco Bell’s lawyers. Taco Bell argued “Taco Tuesday” is a common phrase every restaurant should be able to use.
